What Is Sugarcane Bagasse?

Bagasse (pronounced ba-gass) is the dry fibrous residue left over after sugarcane stalks have been crushed to extract their juice. In traditional sugar processing, bagasse was often burned as waste. Today it's recognised as one of the best raw materials for making compostable food packaging.

How Is It Made Into Plates and Bowls?

The bagasse fibre is mixed with water to create a pulp. This pulp is then pressed into moulds under heat and pressure to create the final shape — whether that's a 9-inch round plate, a 350ml bowl or a 5-compartment meal tray. The process requires no plastic additives and produces a rigid, food-safe product.
